Pre-surgical Evaluations
Psychological evaluations are often ordered before major surgeries. These assessments are usually done with a diagnostic interview and a short personality assessment that can be completed at home. For example, I provide psychological evaluations for clients planning a bariatric surgery, also called weight loss surgery, as well as those undergoing spinal surgery, or spinal cord stimulator implantation, to treat injuries and chronic pain.
Coping skills and social supports
These evaluations help assess your psychological functioning before surgery and identify your emotional strengths and social supports, so that we can increase the likelihood that you will achieve the outcome you want after your surgery. We can discuss the emotions you may be feeling – such as fear and anxiety — and teach coping strategies. Research shows that individuals who cope well with stress before surgery can heal faster and experience less pain. If your surgery involves significant recovery or lifestyle changes, having a support team in place will help you post-surgery.
Psychological diagnoses
There are times when a psychological evaluation may identify underlying conditions, such as depression, PTSD or another diagnosis. When identified early, we can work with your treatment team to ensure that those issues are addressed with psychotherapy or medication if needed, so that they are well controlled before surgery. This is why having coordinated care is such an important step toward treating each individual holistically.
Mind-Body connection
We can’t ignore the effect of our mind-body connection on our health. An investment in exploring emotional health and coping skills helps you reach your goal for the surgery and improve your quality of life.
